Here’s How to Better Understand the Bible for Yourself

So you made it through Part I. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you should really start here.) I don’t know if anyone’s gone through teaching you all of that in the past and that was just a refresher for you? Or maybe common sense? Maybe you’ve always studied the Bible the way I do but in case you haven’t, I wanted to take the time to go in depth to the second part of the method the Holy Spirit gave me to study the Bible and gain understanding for myself.

This world is full of deception, girl. I mean it. And there are things that I began to realize were just like… cheesy catchphrases almost, and not actually scripture?? 👀 You know what I mean! Like (for example) the, “We’re all children of God!” thing? If you’ve heard that in church or even from non-believers— it’s a lie. Christ specifically addresses this in John 17:9-10 and when I SAW THIS FOR MYSELF?!?! 🤯 Yeah.

I was led to make this post because I was upset. I mean it. I got angry when I started studying the Bible with my cousin and we asked the Holy Spirit to show us where He was in the Good Book. (He’s everywhere, FYI.) We’d heard about Jesus being all up in the Old Testament and we knew that Yahuah Elohim was everywhere, but where was His Spirit? And that journey turned into a 9 month “boot camp” to say the least, where we were schooled on the scriptures by God Himself.

It’s your turn. And I just wanted to preface everything that follows by speaking that over you. It’s your turn to no longer be deceived by vultures and wolves in sheep’s clothing in the church out to steal and kill and destroy you instead of actually leading you to the Most High.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

So in Part I of this series, How to Study the Bible for Beginners, we had this founding scripture as our focal text:

16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Matthew 13:16-17 KJV

What We Discussed:

  • Take a scripture and literally define it. You’re gonna need a Strong’s Concordance for this (here’s mine) or an online app such as the Blue Letter Bible app that has one built in. You’re also gonna need a dictionary— here’s my favourite physical copy, and here’s my favourite website to get definitions from multiple dictionaries all at once. You’re welcome. 😂

  • Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you. That’s what He’s here for (John 14:26). We have so much access to deeper revelation of the scriptures through Him that many of us don’t tap into because we don’t believe we’re qualified to hear the Most High on our own. Or we have this inferiority complex that has us constantly second guessing if we’re really hearing what we’re hearing. He’s talking to you. Just listen and trust Him.

  • Use the thesaurus to analyze what the scripture doesn’t mean. I know this part can sound confusing like, “Why would I need to do that? 🤨” But I’m TELLING YOU IT’S GOOD! Because when you come up against Christian apologetics or false doctrine, you can discern if they’re telling you a lie by knowing what the scripture does not mean. When you read Part I, I’m telling you, I go into more detail as to why this is important. (And anyway, here’s a great online Thesaurus here).

  • Cross reference your scripture of study with other scriptures that talk about the same topic. Remember: a Word, whether prophetic or scripture, will always be confirmed by two or three witnesses (2 Corinthians 13:1). This is why it was so good when Yahusha HaMashiach came and was the living manifestation of what MULTIPLE prophets had spoken about in the Old Testament. When cross referencing, using the Blue Letter Bible or sites like Bible Hub are great because you can not only see your scripture in multiple versions (like KJV, NIV, NLT) all at once like in parallel bibles, but you can also read the Cross References section to see where the same topic is mentioned elsewhere in the Word. Here’s an example using that 2 Corinthians scripture: click me to read for yourself.

All of this was a part of the RESEARCH phase of the Bible study method the Holy Spirit gave to me. Phase 2, if you will, revolves around identifying what the scripture is trying to convey to you. We went through a lot of that in Part I of this series because honestly, the IDENTIFY phase really involves defining words and asking the Holy Spirit for His wisdom. But for the purposes of this bible study, I’m gonna show you exactly how deep the rabbit hole can go, using the same founding scripture and context we laid out in phase one.

You ready? Let’s goooooooo.

IT'S TIME TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE BIBLE IS A LEGAL DOCUMENT

This is the phase of the Bible study where I really saw the Most High. I mean it. This is like my favourite phase because you don’t look at the Bible as just a historical document or an Aesop’s Fable type deal. It’s not about learning from Joseph’s mistakes or finding out how long we’ve been on the planet, is what I mean. This phase, the IDENTIFY phase, is when we begin looking at the Bible as a legal document.

Let me explain.

In Part I of our bible study, we went over veryyy briefly how our heart posture is what allows you to either receive or reject the Word of Yah. That’s what the Parable of the Sower really gets into. So when the Holy Ruach showed me that ignoring a murmuring spirit operating in your life is dangerous because it’s a sign of disease, He showed me it’s not just a sign of disease in the body, but specifically a sign of a damaged heart. Let’s really look at this:

The word heart, as described by the Oxford English Dictionary, is “the hollow muscular organ which performs the function of a pump in the circulatory system, receiving blood from the veins and contracting to propel it into the arteries.” It goes on to say that the heart is regarded as, “the centre of the vital or life-maintaining functions of the body; the seat of life; the vital part or principle; (in some contexts) life itself” [1], “the seat or repository of a person's inmost thoughts, feelings, inclinations, etc.; a person's inmost being; the depths of the soul; the soul, the spirit” [2], and “the seat of love, attachment, or affection, or as representing a person's affections, devotion, loyalty, etc” [3]. So to put this in plain English, so to speak, the heart is basically the center of a person’s innermost thoughts, their moral compass, their emotions, and the vital part, the essence, or the innermost part of something.

Now I refrained myself towards the end of Part I and was like, I won’t go down this rabbit hole right now because I’ve already talked a lot, but NOW THAT WE’RE HERE ( 🙃 ) let’s just really go for it because… y’know what I mean? Let’s just do it. So get this:

Going back and forth between this definition above from the Oxford English Dictionary, and the New Oxford American Dictionary version (which is my absolute favorite dictionary, btw), is that the NOAD also adds compassion as an emotion that resides there in the heart. Out of all of these definitions the Ruach Ha’Qodesh brought to my attention while studying these two scriptures, it was the final one that He wanted me to focus on that gave me pause.

“The condition of land,” the Oxford English Dictionary goes on to say, “soil, etc., as to its capacity to provide what is required of it; vigour, fertility. Also: the capacity of grass, etc., to thrive. Agriculture in later use.” And if we count in the NOAD’s version, the agricultural definition of the word heart usually involves a modifier. This means that there is usually something outside of the land that is maintaining its condition. (I know it’s a lot, but stay with me here.) These are all the LEGALLY AGREED UPON definitions of the word heart. We know from the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23) that the Word of the Most High is what is sown into the heart, that’s the seed. He spoke about the heart as soil. So to further understand what he’s talking about, you not only should look at like the original Greek translation of the word heart, but also define it with some dictionaries. Because this is, the root meaning of the word, what holds up in the courts of heaven, just like they would on earth in the court of law.

A LOT OF CHRISTIANS DO NOT READ THEIR BIBLES SO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS AS BELIEVERS

I live in the US. I’m a Midwestern girl with a Midwestern heart (meaning I’m into the cardigans, sipping tea on autumn days, being an absolute aesthetic, you get it). Here in the States we have the Supreme Court which is like at the top of our judicial system. The Supreme Court Justices basically have the job, when cases reach them, to define whether the prosecution or the defense is right based on the interpretation of the law. What I love about John 14:26 is that the Holy Ruach is described by Christ as THE advocate. Let’s look at it here:

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 14:26 NIV

I like this translation because in the King James Version, we get “comforter.” And now both are right. (This is where having a Strong’s Concordance or Blue Letter Bible app can come in handy.) Whether you look up comforter or advocate, the Strong’s Concordance gives you the word, “paraklētos” which means, “summoned, called to one's side, esp. called to one's aid.” This is good stuff to know because as you read further, you begin to understand that when the Most High is talking about aid, He’s talking about one’s legal aid, which is a whole lot more than what your initial understanding of “comforter” might be… I dunno about you, but I think blanket. That’s just me. 😅

Anyway. Following up on the legal aid tip is crucial to going deep into the Parable of the Sower because here’s what comes right after our initial definition in the Strong’s Concordance: “one who pleads another's cause before a judge, a pleader, counsel for defense, legal assistant, an advocate.” [4]

What’s one of the ways that HaSatan is referenced? The accuser (Revelation 12:10). What does accuser mean? Well, according to The Century Dictionary, it means, “One who accuses or blames; specifically, a person who formally accuses another of an offense before a magistrate or a tribunal of any kind.” Satan is LEGALLY accusing you, LEGALLY trying to plant bad seeds into your heart. Just like if you don’t show up in court when there’s a lawsuit against you, if you don’t show up in court with the Holy Spirit as your “defense lawyer” so to speak, there is soooo much HaSatan can be getting away with in your life because you didn’t know your LEGAL RIGHTS AS A DAUGHTER OF THE MOST HIGH YAH.

THE. FIGHT. FOR. THE. SEEDS. PLANTED. IN. THE. SOIL. OF. YOUR. HEART. IS. A. LEGAL. ONE.

Let that sink in.

Understanding the Bible on a Deeper Level (Part II) | Bible Study for Women of God | John 14:26 Moodboard

WE HAVE AN ENEMY THAT IS USING THE BIBLE TO FIGHT AGAINST US, SO WE SHOULD KNOW WHAT IT SAYS

Our biblical ancestors knew the Law. I mean, they literally called it that. They knew it, they disobeyed it, got thrown into captivity multiple times for said disobedience, got saved when they repented, rinse and repeat, you get it. They were also an agricultural people, so hence the Parable of the Sower speaks in terms of the lifestyle they were living. It was the Most High’s original design for us to be caretakers of the earth (Genesis 1:28-31), and that’s what they were doing at the time Yahusha was speaking to them in Matthew 13:1-23. You have to keep this in the back of your mind so that you have the appropriate context when reading what I’m about to say next.

Now.

Earlier, when we were discussing the legal definition of heart, one of the definitions, brought up by the Oxford English Dictionary, was talking about agricultural terms for heart. It was talking about the condition of land, something our ancestors would’ve understood. I’m coming back around to this because in Part I of this series, when we were in our research stage, the Holy Spirit really wanted me to look at this scripture from a position where I was acknowledging that a murmuring spirit comes into play when it comes to signs of damage in the heart. What I didn’t know then, when I started the study, was that the looking up the word blessed would lead me to medical terms and all this, and this is why it’s important to ask the Holy Spirit for guidance when studying the Word of God. What I found was just CRAZY but made so much sense, and I’m gonna share it with you now:

LEGALLY, once again, a murmuring spirit can bring damage to the entire body, especially the kidneys. Just… just hear me out.

So get this: the main functions of the kidneys is to purify the blood by removing nitrogenous waste products and excreting them in urine. They also control the fluid and ion levels in the body by excreting any excesses. The kidneys were anciently thought to control disposition and temperament (New Oxford American Dictionary). When kidneys do not function normally anymore, you need what? You need a modifier. (I hope you’re getting all the connections the Holy Ruach is giving, because I’m living for them, tbh!!) Remember what we said earlier in this study? The agricultural definition of the word heart usually involves a modifier.

In medicine, when it comes to the kidneys, the modifier is dialysis. In the Word of God, Yahusha is our great physician, so it’s the Most High Yah that will heal us (Exodus 15:26 KJV). We get that. We all know the slogan the church is a hospital for the sick. The thing that gets me upset about it is that we’re not supposed to stay sick, and if you know or have known anyone on dialysis, that’s it. They’re gonna be on that for life. That’s not what our Messiah did. There is no need for dialysis with the cross. Look at Psalm 41:3 or 1 Peter 2:24! Healed. Completely. Christ wasn’t walking around Galilee putting people on dialysis and calling it healing, that’s not how this works. And so a murmuring spirit is kinda like the… pharmaceutical version of “healing.” It treats it, but never cures it. You’re never truly well if that spirit is operating in your life. You’ll need a modifier. You’ll need dialysis. And what blew me away was what the Holy Spirit revealed about dialysis when we continued our investigative work.

WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT IS AVAILABLE TO YOU AS A CHILD OF GOD, YOUR WHOLE LIFE CHANGES

So look: the origin of the word dialysis is the greek word dialuein, dia meaning ‘apart’ and luein meaning ‘set free’ [5]. That is to say, that a murmuring spirit can so damage you, the Body of Christ, that it takes the Word of Yah to set you free.

I wanted to keep this short and sweet. If you got it, great. If you’re still putting the pieces together, lemme break it down how the Holy Ruach broke it down for me:

A murmuring spirit is a recurring spirit, so the damage is done over and over again. It comes back. This is then a spirit you must really guard your heart against because it’s lethal. Remember the Children of Israel murmuring against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness? What happened to them, my friend? Only two people from the original Exodus Party made it into the promised land. TWO. That is a big deal! And what was at play? This spirit, this spirit right here. These people DIEEEDDD, my friend. Smooth left earth. God wasn’t playing with that. And when we take all of our notes, we can see that behind the scenes (because remember how in Part I I mentioned that everything starts in the spiritual realm before moving over into the physical?) a murmuring spirit was at work, accusing them in the courts of heaven. They let the spirit talk to them long enough that it planted a seed in their hearts, and they started complaining like that spirit complains. Over and over again.

Forty years is over and over again. It’s a repeat offender, this spirit, and like you can see with the definition of dialysis, taking it back to there, it separates you from the Most High. I think without even using a dictionary, we can all agree on the fact that the word apart means something like separate. And that’s what happened time and time again when you read the Book of Exodus— these people started complaining and doing the idol worship and all that and multiple times, Yah separated the people who were going to cross over from the ones who were going to die in the wilderness. They were separated with death.

Some people live with this spirit. It’s so sinister because they don’t have to. I truly believe that this is the spirit behind heart murmurs. It’s the physical manifestation, at least of one of them, of this spirit tampering with your bloodline— and more on that bloodline stuff for another post. 😅 But seriously, when you are on physical or spiritual dialysis, you never get set you free from the damage in your body. It’s a temporary solution to a LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM. Where’s the joy in that?

When we looked up the word blessed in Part I, How to Study the Bible for Beginners, you didn’t see life threatening problems involved with the definition of blessed. We may go through trials and tribulations, as was promised us (John 15:18-25; 16:33, Acts 14:21-22), but we’re supposed to see the other side of that trouble. We’re not intended to live there, and that’s the illegal trespassing that HaSatan gets away with that I have a problem with. It’s the reason why the Holy Spirit guided me through this bible study and this entry to the blog. You needed to see the scripture for yourself, you needed to know without a shadow of a doubt what your LEGAL rights were as a citizen of the Kingdom of God, and you needed to be able to see with your own two eyes and reach an understanding so that you could stand in your God given authority and take back the peace and the abundant life promised to you through our Messiah (John 10:10).

Understanding the Bible on a Deeper Level (Part II) | Called By My Name | 2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV

Understanding the Bible is YOUR Responsibility, and Yours Alone

Yahusha HaMashiach healed the sick each time He was moved to compassion (Matthew 14:14, 15:32-39, 20:34 KJV). And that was the end of it. A murmuring spirit will repeat the same problem over and over in your life. It’ll keep speaking illness and sickness and disease into your situations. When you know your legal rights to what He has promised you when you’re in right relationship with Him, you can enter the courts of heaven with the Holy Spirit and have a great case against the accuser trying to illegally pollute you with stuff. This is what happened to the first three people in the Parable of the Sower— they didn't have a strong enough defense against the evil one.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14

Understanding the Bible as a law book is so very exciting to me, and I hope that some of that excitement rubbed off on you, encouraging you to get into the Word to see what your legal rights are as a citizen of the Kingdom of Yah! I know we barely scratched the surface with this post, but diving deeper on your own in your private time with the LORD, I’m sure, will lead to just such wonderful revelations from Him.

As for part three, we are about to get into what is probably the hardest phase of my study method. 👀 This is the one where most people fall off. I’m just sayin. It’s not the easiest, but it’s the most worthwhile of the three. It’s just that until you understand stages one and two, you can’t accomplish stage three by any means. And I mean, by any.

If you’re still along for the ride, this bible study will continue in the next post. Until then, my dear, dear friend— much love. 🫶🏾
