You're Not a Witch Just Because You Want to Take Care of Your Body— It's the Intention Behind How You're Using Herbs That Can Lead to Sin

Now lemme preface this: I am no medical professional. When I started my journey into herbalism, it was because of my mother. She was overweight, riddled with arthritis in her hands, hips, and knees, and was diabetic. With all of these things not really working in her favor, she continued to eat poorly until she couldn’t because of, well, a cancer diagnosis that rocked both of our worlds.

No matter how I’d gotten on her case or tried to get her to change her diet and her activity levels, she ended up being a cautionary tale for me. And so in the course of watching my mother die, I became passionate about investigating ways to naturally heal my own body from years of eating fast food, bad sleeping habits from working 2-3 jobs to get by, and honestly? Almost even more than the push to do this because of watching my mother, I saw… all these Millennial and Gen Z women coming down with PCOS all of a sudden on the internet. I didn’t want to be one of them.

I’d watched enough testimonials on YouTube to know that healing from PCOS started in the gut. Diabetes already ran on both sides of my family (my dad had it too), so when I gained a few pounds and felt my skin dulling from all the stress I was carrying in the months leading up to my mother’s death, I knew had to do something… and something fast. That’s when this scripture came back to mind:

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Genesis 1:29

You might not have the same motivations as I do, woman of God, but if you want the same results— a good night’s sleep, less acne, less bloating after every meal, glowing skin, hair, and nails? Herbal teas can be your “gateway drug” into holistic wellness and natural remedies to heal your body from decades of shame, pain, and stress. Because it needs a little TLC in today’s world. A world that isn’t as quick to give you holistic ways to solve these kinds of problems, but instead gives you prescriptions to help you manage them.

1. BEST FOR OVERALL HEALTH: ORGANIC MORINGA WITH SPEARMINT & SAGE TEA

Best for Overall Health: Traditional Medicinals Organic Moringa with Spearmint & Sage Tea

BEST FOR OVERALL HEALTH

Moringa is a superfood, let’s start there. Like kale and all those things in your green smoothies, yeah, this is one of them. And when I went to a natural, professional herbalist (could’ve been clinical, but I no longer have their information to verify) when invited to one of their seminars, I was introduced to the benefits of things like African black soap, going vegan, and this.

Full of dietary fiber, minerals, and nutrients like vitamin A and C, it’s not only a crazy immune booster, but helps combat sooooo many health ailments that Western society has been dealing with with our ultra-processed diets and sedentary lifestyles. Truly, having tried it in powder form by itself (not something I recommend), I prefer it with other complementary health boosters like the ones found in this lovely tea.

Health Benefits of Moringa Tea: Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunity and energy booster, known to combat fatigue, and may reduce high blood sugar and cholesterol levels (aka reducing the risk for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases). [1]

2. BEST DETOX TEA: TRADITIONAL MEDICINALS ORGANIC DANDELION LEAF & ROOT TEA

Most of the time, if you came from unhealthy diet culture like me, when you hear detox tea you think, “I wanna be skinny! 😩” When the Most High converted my mind from thinking health = thin to health = strength? It changed how I went about looking at my day to day routines.

Instead of a laxative tea, which is basically what skinny teas are all about, it’s time to look at the liver and kidneys. Though dandelion roots are a natural diuretic, they also help digestion to flush out toxins. Because listen to me: you might feel better about yourself being thin, but if you pass out because your organs are shot and you haven’t been eating enough to sustain yourself just to get that dream body? You’re in for a lot more health problems down the road than being fat and unable to fit into your high school jeans.

Health Benefits of Dandelion Tea: Stimulates bile flow (which improves digestion), mild natural laxative (high in potassium to flush out toxins), lowers blood pressure (produced by fluid retention), can reduce swelling (due to better blood flow). [2]

3. BEST FOR CONSTIPATION: TRADITIONAL MEDICINALS ORGANIC SMOOTH MOVE® PEPPERMINT TEA

My mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in March of 2025. She didn’t even last 30 days after the diagnosis. While we were in the hospital (because where she was, I was), she got constipated from her lack of mobility and the medication she was on. So she was prescribed this pill that the nurse said was, “basically Senna.”

Now I didn’t know what Senna was, so after googling it, my mind flashed back to the boxes of peppermint tea we had in the house that my mother had ordered because “they were on sale” and she could never resist a good deal. Though it made me sad to see those boxes back at the house after she passed and I finally went home, it pushed me further into studying what else I didn’t know about peppermint and other herbal teas that we owned and loved.

Health Benefits of Peppermint Tea: Clears bad breath (who doesn’t need that?!), helps bloating, soothes cramps, indigestion, and IBS, helps soothe stomach aches and release trapped gas. [3]

4. BEST FOR MENSTRUAL RELIEF: FGO ORGANIC RASPBERRY LEAF TEA

I have heavy periods. I use the biggest tampons on the market along with overnight pads throughout my entire cycle. I bloat, my breasts balloon and so sometimes, my back wants to tap out due to all the extra weight. When my mother bought some of this for me? It revolutionized my periods. Bloating WHERE? 😭 That in itself was the most uncomfortable part of my cycle, and to be released from that? I’m telling you: there is a God.

Paired with honey, ginger, and lemon, I have a recipe for some good ole R&R during my periods now. I haven’t checked out how well it works with jujube, a date that I was introduced to by peering into Chinese medicinal recipes for menstrual cycles… but even if I just stuck with the raspberry leaves, I’d be just fine.

Health Benefits of Raspberry Leaf Tea: Reduces bleeding (due to astringent properties), combats infertility, helps relieve menstrual cramps, aids breastfeeding, known to strengthen the womb for childbirth, and soothes nausea. [4]

5. BEST FOR JOINT PAIN: TRADITIONAL MEDICINALS ORGANIC TURMERIC & GINGER WITH MEADOWSWEET TEA

Before my mother’s world was rocked with cancer, she was suffering from severe arthritis that was just… it was just awful. When she began buying turmeric from iHerb, I didn’t pay much attention until one night, while watching one of our favorite period films, she starts flexing her hand and telling me how her hand didn’t hurt as much. That her research had worked!

So of course, me being me, I started my own google search and saw the benefits of mixing turmeric with a little black pepper and ginger in tea. The claims stated that not only did it help with digestion, but it battled inflammation, which is the root of arthritis. So especially in the colder winter months, when I knew she would feel it in her joints more, I made my mother this tea and we’d watch movies.

Health Benefits of Turmeric Tea: Anti-inflammatory (which soothes arthritis) and lowers cholesterol levels (which reduces risk of stroke and heart attacks), and natural anti-coagulant (or blood thinner). [5]

Health Benefits of Ginger Tea: Anti-inflammatory, circulatory stimulant (which is great for heart health), antiviral (battles coughs, colds, flu, and respiratory problems), and digestive stimulant (natural remedy for indigestion, nausea, bloating, and cramps). [6]

Health Benefits of Meadowsweet Tea: Anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic (natural remedy for arthritic issues like osteoarthritis, gout, lumbago, and sciatica), digestive remedy (often used to combat diarrhea and IBS), soothes acid indigestion and heartburn. [7]

6. BEST FOR IMMUNE BOOSTING: TRADITIONAL MEDICINALS ORGANIC IMMUNE ZOOM® ELDERBERRY ECHINACEA TEA

For years, whenever my mother even had the hint of a cough or I thought my throat thought it was going to get a bit sore, I’d pull out the organic elderberry syrup that my mother had introduced me to years ago and take a spoonful. It wasn’t until I thought about adding it to my honey ginseng tea that I considered I’d come across a super!booster for my immune system during the winter months or “flu season.”

I don’t get sick. I haven’t had a cold, the flu, none of it in since 2017. (Yes, really.) Now while I do believe that’s because I stand on 1 Peter 2:24 that this is the case. But also, while rebuking the very sickness I’ll feel trying to come on, I’ll occasionally drink a tea like this to ensure that if there’s a virus going around? I don’t get it.

Health Benefits of Elderberry Tea: Antiviral and anti-inflammatory, a natural mild laxative, helps to speed up recovery from upper respiratory infections, and known to be immune boosting. [8]

Health Benefits of Echinacea Tea: Anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, known to heal wounds and treat throat infections, and immune-stimulant. [9]

7. BEST FOR MANAGING PCOS SYMPTOMS: TRADITIONAL MEDICINALS ORGANIC SPEARMINT TEA

I know it’s the food. No one can convince me otherwise. The amount of women in my generation that are dealing with PCOS symptoms is just… it’s ridiculous. And I’ve noticed that when women have decided to take measures to change their diets and deal with their gut health? They’re losing weight, their skin is clearing up, and those pesky chin hairs are diminishing. Not a coincidence.

That being said, when registered dietician Alyssa Pacheco, mentioned on her blog that her research showed that spearmint tea could be a great relief to women battling with the symptoms of PCOS, I was intrigued. Drinking it as a preventative measure became something I was determined to add to my own routine. And I did.

Health Benefits of Spearmint Tea: Anti-inflammatory, may lower testosterone levels, reduce unwanted hair growth and hair loss, reduce acne, known to lower blood sugar levels, and suggested to improve cognitive function and attention spans. [10]

8. BEST SOOTHING TEA: THE REPUBLIC OF TEA CHAMOMILE LEMON TEA

Now if you’re an organic snob, this one isn’t for you! 😂 And yes, I could’ve found an organic tea to share with y’all but listen… I actually drink teas from this company and… organic or not? They’re just that good.

This was actually the company that once introduced to, I really thought I could be a tea person (I was guzzling coffee by the pot, okay? 😅). When I moved in with my mother to help her out, she being the culprit of my new tea vision, it was another blend that she was addicted to (which will be a little further down the list) and I found myself making a cup a day and not really… missing coffee as much as I had trying to go it cold turkey. I dunno, I’m just a firm believer that when you’re attempting to make healthier food choices, having something palatable is key. If it’s gross, most people come on. It doesn’t matter HOW MUCH IT WILL BENEFIT YOU if you stick it out, you’re gonna crack and pick up the snacks— and possibly binge, at that. 👀 So yes, I could’ve given you organic chamomile. But with this blend also introducing lemon balm, linden flowers, and lavender? It’s healthy and delicious. How is that not a win? 🥰

Health Benefits of Chamomile Tea: Known to reduce bloating, alleviate cramping, IBS and indigestion, as well as soothe stomach aches and ulcers; may calm anxiety, emotional shock, headaches, and nervous tensions; also known to aid in sleeplessness and reduce stress. [11]

9. BEST FOR CIRCULATORY HEALTH: TRADITIONAL MEDICINALS ORGANIC NETTLE LEAF TEA

Do you chew on ice? Yeah, me too.

I’ve known for a while that it’s something to do with iron, magnesium, yada yada. And I’m not opposed to popping vitamins, I’m truly not. I just know that before I start adding vitamins in pill form to my diet, I need to actually change my diet first and what I’m putting in my body. And drinking nettle leaf tea, seeing all its benefits for the circulatory system? I think that’s one of those changes I need to make before I start shopping at The Vitamin Shoppe.

Health Benefits of Nettle Tea: A mild remedy for iron deficiency in anemics, used to alleviate fluid retention, aid in joint and kidney health, and lower high blood pressure. [12]

10. BEST FOR RESPIRATORY HEALTH: TRADITIONAL MEDICINALS ORGANIC LICORICE ROOT TEA

Now a lot of the teas on here, ironically, also aid in digestion. Like I said in the beginning, it’s interesting to me how what we put in our bellies has an overall effect on our health. Symptoms that are completely avoidable usually have a root issue originating in our gut. Licorice root tea is an herbal remedy known for treating stomach ulcers and detoxing the body, but it also has many benefits in how we breathe.

It’s not called the grandfather of herbs for no reason. Like seriously, there are so many great benefits to this root. But if you’re asthmatic? Start with this tea. Start here. I curated this list because sometimes, as a Christian herbalist, you can feel realllyyy overwhelmed and, well… a little bit nervous too. You’re not out to be a kitchen witch. You’re not making concoctions while praying over crystals (and if you are, STOP IT NOW 😤). So with any of these recommendations, if you have a few extra coins after payday? Look it over and look at which tea would benefit you the most right now and buy that one. Women with respiratory issues? This is your cue.

Health Benefits of Licorice Root Tea: Anti-inflammatory (for both allergic and arthritic conditions), anti-arthritic, known to lower blood cholesterol and soothe gastric mucous membranes, and cooling. [13]

11. BEST FOR CALMING NERVES: TRADITIONAL MEDICINALS ORGANIC LEMON BALM TEA

I almost feel like I’m saving the best for last, tbh. Because, well, this is your depression tea.

It’s one thing to be soothed by something like chamomile, but this herbal tea is known for relaxing and restoring your nervous system. You know, the one that helps you to freak out. 😂 But seriously, it’s great in the summer because it’s cooling, and it’s great for indigestion… but really— stressed out? This is the one for you. Start here. Do not pass go, do not collect $200 until you start here.

Health Benefits of Lemon Balm Tea: A mild sedative, anti-depressant, digestive stimulant, known to relax peripheral blood vessels, anti-viral and anti-bacterial, known to help treat asthma, bronchitis, and the early onset of influenza, also great for soothing body tension and nervous exhaustion.
